Australia’s share market began the new trading week on a cautious note, with local stocks moving higher despite continued uncertainty around inflation, interest rates, bond yields and international developments. Investors remained watchful after a turbulent period for equities and another increase in Australian borrowing costs.

By midday on Monday, the S&P/ASX 200 had gained 25.1 points, or 0.29 per cent, to reach 8,707.2. The broader All Ordinaries Index also moved upward, adding 25.9 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 8,877.9.

The modest rise followed a difficult week for Australian investors. Markets experienced significant volatility after the Reserve Bank of Australia delivered its fourth interest rate increase of 2026. A sharp sell-off on Thursday also removed almost $60 billion from the Australian stock market, highlighting the sensitivity of investors to changing economic conditions.

Global Events Remain Important for Australian Markets

With fewer major domestic economic announcements expected in the coming trading sessions, attention is likely to remain focused on international developments. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to influence oil prices, adding another layer of uncertainty for investors and businesses.

Movements in crude oil remain particularly important because changes in energy costs can affect inflation, household budgets and company expenses. Brent crude prices eased slightly after OPEC+ members agreed to maintain their November production targets. Plans by G7 countries to release fuel and diesel reserves have also added another factor to the global energy outlook.

Australian energy companies benefited from the stronger market mood. Santos shares climbed 1.1 per cent to $8.64, while Woodside posted a smaller gain of 0.2 per cent. Several coal producers also performed well during the session.

Mining Stocks Gain as Copper Prices Recover

The materials sector was another positive area of the market, rising 0.6 per cent. Major mining companies including BHP, Rio Tinto and South32 gained as copper prices recovered following a recent decline from record levels.

Gold-related stocks, however, delivered a mixed performance. Gold remained close to $US4,153 an ounce, equivalent to approximately $A5,974, while the local gold sub-index slipped 0.2 per cent.

Consumer-focused companies faced more pressure. The consumer discretionary sector declined 0.7 per cent, with companies such as Wesfarmers, Aristocrat and The Lottery Corporation among those weighing on the sector. Consumer staples, utilities, real estate investment trusts and information technology stocks also moved lower.

Corporate Developments Add to Market Activity

Several company announcements attracted investor attention. Biotechnology company CSL reached an agreement with Alentis Therapeutics to jointly develop and promote a treatment targeting rare kidney and liver diseases.

Australian artificial intelligence infrastructure company Firmus is also considering a possible Nasdaq listing. The potential move comes ahead of the company’s expected Australian float on October 23, with reports indicating a targeted valuation of $43.7 billion.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare shares strengthened after the company announced plans to sell part of its Drury property to Health New Zealand.

Outlook Remains Cautious

Market conditions could remain unsettled as investors assess the impact of interest rates, inflation, stretched valuations, artificial intelligence-related uncertainty and geopolitical developments.

At the same time, there are reasons for some optimism. Continued economic growth, the possibility of avoiding a global recession and stronger corporate earnings could provide support for share markets over the next year. Expectations of interest rate reductions in 2027 may also improve the investment environment if inflation continues to moderate.

The Australian dollar was trading at 69.54 US cents, compared with 69.37 US cents at 5pm on Friday.

Overall, the early-week rise in Australian shares reflects a market that remains positive but cautious. Investors are balancing potential opportunities from economic growth and corporate earnings against significant risks from global conflict, inflation, interest rates and elevated asset valuations.
